Breast Cancer Support Group

What happens now that I have finished my treatment? Who can I talk to now I am back to work? This is what Alison and Linda were asking themselves a few months ago. They met at the South East Cancer Help Centre in 2008 and attended a short course of Breast Cancer support sessions containing a mixture of:
• Practical ideas – how can I adapt my clothes now I wear a mastectomy bra?
• Managing side effects from drugs – have you tried a cooling pillow?
• Finding solutions to problems – I feel awkward changing on the beach.
• Being amongst friends – you don’t have to explain how you are feeling, we understand.
• Keeping positive – enjoying a joke about a shared experience.
• Advice – from a breast care nurse and information and demonstrations from complementary therapists.
All the meetings were lead and facilitated by a Centre counsellor and there was an agreed ethos of confidentiality within the group.
Alison and Linda both found the support sessions so positive and helpful that they approached the Centre with the idea of setting up a regular monthly evening meeting for women and men who have been affected by Breast Cancer.
The Breast Cancer Support Group meet 2nd Tuesday every month and the meetings will be between 6.30 and 8.30pm.
Please come along and meet Alison, Linda and others in the same situation.
Contact the Centre for more information or to check exact dates of meetings.
