Musical Memories

A cracking, nostalgic evening of song was produced by the South East Cancer Help Centre Choir as they celebrated the lives of past members. The evening provided entertainment aplenty including many pieces which are fairly challenging for any choir and even more so for our own special little band of singers. No problem whatsoever - they performed brilliantly!

We also had some unforgettable soloists - Manuela’s beautiful rendition of "Somewhere That's Green" from the musical Little Shop of Horrors or Laura’s powerful version of “Take That Look off Your Face” by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Our own star Annie sung about her “Sentimental Reasons”. Unusually for the Centre Choir we also had a male duet performed memorably by Trevor and Tom who sang with some panache about being “On the Street Where You Live”.

At the interval we remembered our friends no longer with us, especially former members of the choir Brian Bunkell and Giselle Farrar. We also heard about the sad passing of Siphiwe Ntshebe, known as the Black Pavarotti, a friend of the Centre who performed several times for us. Tragically Siphiwe died from meningitis just a couple of weeks before he was due to sing at the opening of the World Cup at the request of Nelson Mandela.

At the end of the evening the Centre was presented with a cheque from the Croydon Lions. Many thanks to Laura Carew-Gibbs for conducting in her inimitable style and Robert Randall for his accompaniments throughout the evening.
