Cancer Tsar's Encouragement

On a cold wet night in September, National Cancer Director Professor Mike
Richards came to the Centre with two consultants to hold a Medical Forum about
advances in cancer treatment.

The audience of local healthcare professionals as well as Centre members
heard Professor Richards explain the National Cancer Plan. Professor Mike Richards, National Cancer DirectorThis included lessor known developments: GPs faxing hospitals to arrange an appointment before the cancer patient leaves the surgery; PSA blood test to screen for prostate cancer available from GPs on demand, with adequate information; breast screening age raised to 70 years; diet improving measures such as five pieces offruit/veg per day and piloting in deprived areas the issue of a piece of fruit daily to schoolchildren of 4-6 yrs.

The Royal Marsden's Consultant Oncologist, Dr John Yarnold then described recent advances in radiotherapy, with imaging devices to shape the radio beam, so reducing complications to internal organs. There has been a 20% fall in mortality rates for breast cancer, although numbers have risen since women are living longer.

Finally, Mayday's Director of Cancer Services, Consultant Mr Stephen Ebbs
described advances in Croydon. Mayday Hospital now has accredited teams for breast, colorectal and upper GI cancers. Teams are visiting hospitals around the country reviewing cancer prevention, genetics, screening, rapid access clinics, prompt specialist action, extended teams and support care. The speakers then gave illuminating answers to questions from the floor (an account of the speeches is in the Centre Library).

Evidently impressed, Prof. Richards reports "Health professionals and voluntary
groups need to work closely together to provide the highest possible quality of care for patients and their families. The benefits of partnerships working are emphasised in the NHS Cancer Plan. I was delighted to see this partnership in action when I visited the South East Cancer Help Centre on September 26th"
